A collection of twelve closely related, sometimes contemplative, racy, hilarious, short stories set in New Orleans at the end of World War II. Not war stories, they sum up, in the narrator's reflections, a typical experience in the Navy in the Pacific theatre.  More importantly they recapture that brief postlude that existed in 1945 and 1946 between war and peace as they celebrate the sensuous, socializing influences of the old city of New Orleans.
